So my E60 M5 is complaining.

If I leave it alone for a while, a few hours or just a few minutes, the Comfort Access (CA) system doesn’t recognize my touch which is the magic that unlocks the doors after a quick electrical pulse to ID the key in my pocket. I can still unlock with the fob, but CA doesn’t work.

Then I get in and start the car and it bings and bongs and throws up a warning the the battery has been disconnected. This is a big deal, disconnecting the battery in an M5. Many folks will hook up a charger to the car while swapping batteries, afraid of what will happen if the battery goes away. It’s absolutely no big deal at all, it just makes the car re-adapt settings as it re-learns them. Does more good than harm I’d bet all said and done. Setting the date is the most involved part.

I figured this was a fault in the CA system. It’ll keep a car from truly “shutting down” and drain the battery if a CA switch in a door goes bad, or any other part goes bad. Failure = a short, really, and your battery dies as the computer stays awake thinking something is about to happen. This was my engineering mind reaching for a complicated answer involving the CA system and a switch inside of a door and I was contemplating disconnecting the rear door sensors and .... well let’s see what the multi-meter says....

With engine off: 11.2 volts — oh my.

With engine on (idling): 10.8 volts!!!

I haven’t fixed this problem and have only diagnosed it tonight but I am willing to bet it’s the ...

Ah your turbocharger is going out?

Kinja'd!!!

Apart from the joking, that sucks dude. Is there any way to reach it easily in the cramped engine bay of the M5?

Well played. I hadn’t realized that turbocharger would work with the hint!

And.... no. I believe it requires removing the radiator believe it or not, but I haven’t looked under the hood to confirm. The battery is in the trunk which is where I was with the multi meter and there’s the trunk light as I was in the dark with no flashlight diagnosing things.

I’m confident enough that it’s a job that requires a lot of leaky stuff that I’ve already emailed my service guy at the dealer and asked him to set aside a 435 or M235 for me to hoon the bejesus out of as a loaner while they swap the alternator. If it looks approachable to do myself I’ll cancel but I’m stuck with street parking two blocks from a police station so it’s not like jack stands in the street while draining coolant is going to work out :/

Is that a Stage III Turbonator?
